“Sometimes it takes a wave to reveal where you are standing. “
If you’ve ever walked along the beach, there is a place between the water’s edge and the dry sun-baked sand where the ground can feel deceptively firm.
Standing in this area can provide unique feeling. Your feet can be firmly planted on the hard surface, but as soon as the tide begins to roll in and a wave washes past your feet, you immediately start to sink down into the sand.
One of the most frustrating experiences I’ve ever had was something similar – but in a spiritual sense.
I had spent a good portion of my life surrounded by church activities… studies, events, worship, giving, and serving. I was one of those “at church every time the doors were open” kind of people. I enjoyed it. But one day, out of the blue, a wave crashed in without warning. This single wave threw every part of life into turmoil… marriage, employment, finances, sense of worth, and more.
In an instant, I found myself questioning what I believed.
– I didn’t do anything to deserve this!
– I thought that God was obligated to protect me from trouble.
– I thought that bad things shouldn’t happen in my life if I’m genuinely following Him.
– I thought I’d been building my life on a solid foundation!
Now to be clear, I never consciously wrestled with these thoughts before. But when the wind and waves came, these mixed up philosophies began to seep out of the hidden recesses of my thoughts.
Or to put it another way, when the wave crashed, my feet started to sink into the sand.
Consider this powerful illustration Jesus gave at the close of a long sermon…
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” (Matthew 7:24–27)
So how do you know the difference?
How can you tell if your feet are on the Rock or the sand?
In this illustration, Jesus describes the person who builds on the solid rock as the one who listens to and obeys His teaching. You can safely assume He is referring in large part to the things He had just finished teaching. Now, consider the very first statement He made in this sermon. It is a call for us to realize how much we truly need God (see notes below¹). Essentially, this is the heart of the problem when we find our feet sinking. We’ve inadvertently wandered from our complete dependence on God.
This wandering can be so hard to detect – especially in the middle of religious activity. Like I mentioned earlier, I was entrenched in all sorts of church related activities. I was completely oblivious to the fact that my personal relationship with God had been drying up. A hectic church calendar took the place of real spiritual growth.
Search your life. When it comes to your spiritual life, which of these three options seems to describe you.
1. Self-centered spirituality: You attend worship services and Bible studies regularly. You want to grow closer to God; but with your busy life, you often just show up out of obligation, commitment, or habit. Sometimes you attend just to keep up appearances. Consider Jesus’ description of a day when many people will recite a list of personal religious experiences, but never had a relationship with Him (Matthew 7:21-23)².
2. Others-centered spirituality: You give your time and abilities generously, serving in a variety of ways. You truly want to see others come to know Jesus and grow in their relationship with Him. But you find yourself burned out from constantly giving when it seems like so few are truly committed. Consider the story where Martha was busy while Mary sat at Jesus’ feet (Luke 10:38–42)³.
3. God-centered spirituality: Your relationship with God is the core of every part of life (marriage, family, employment, and activities.) Your choice to serve, worship, give, attend Bible studies, or be involved in any kind of church event stems solely from a passionate and growing relationship with God. You are connected with God throughout each day and fully depending on Him.
Don’t be mistaken… the first two are sand. They are simply just religious activity on the surface of a person’s life. They look and feel solid, but will eventually fail.
The sand feels firm until the wave arrives.
Be completely honest with yourself… Knowing the correct answer is only the beginning. Go back and look at the three options. Are you certain your feet are planted on the Rock? Knowing that you need to be centered on God doesn’t necessarily mean that you are actually thinking and living that way. All three of these can appear similar on the surface. You might not be able to see the differences in your own life, and others might not be able to spot the differences in you either.
Sometimes it takes some waves (big or small) to help us realize that our feet were not planted on solid ground after all. When you feel your feet sinking, and you find yourself questioning why, the problem is most likely that you are not standing on the Rock. In those moments, your job, your marriage, your friendships, your money, your influence, your determination, or even your religion will not save you from sinking.
God values your relationship with Him over your feelings. If it takes a wave to help you realize you are standing on the sand, then let that helpless sinking feeling draw you back to Him.
The Rock doesn’t move, change, or sink.
