Some people are easy to love. Some people are not.

 

What does “love your neighbor as yourself” really mean?  Is it more of a metaphorical or figurative mindset?  Or does it really mean that we are to demonstrate love to everyone we come across… waiting in the check-out line, sitting in church, driving down the road, at the family reunion, in the break-room at work?

 

I believe Jesus called us to really love people.  All people. Openly. Actively. Genuinely. Not just those who you get along with.  Not just those who don’t irritate you.

 

But if we’re honest, many things get in the way of loving our neighbors: Selfishness, Self-Centeredness, Self-Righteousness, Pride, Jealousy, Laziness, and more.  A central theme in all of those things is a love of self over a love of others.  Check out this reminder about how Jesus personally lived this out: “Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” (Philippians 2:3–5)

 

Don’t bother putting on a fake painted smile when you are in public. That won’t fix the issue. Sure, people will irritate you and even hurt you (more on that here). You may need a few moments to yourself from time to time. But if you find yourself regularly pushing away from people or making excuses for being exclusionary or withdrawn, you might want to check your heart.  This is especially critical if you serve in any kind of ministry role.

 

Genuine love for others comes from a heart that desires to be more and more like Jesus.  It comes from a realization that God “so loved the world.”  We should strive for that same gospel-driven heart for others to know the love of the Father.

 

Openly and actively demonstrate genuine neighborly love to everyone you come across each day.
