Who doesn’t love Summer?!?

Odds are, the people in your Small Group love summertime (who doesn’t???).  But for you as the Small Group leader, summer can often be a difficult time to maintain momentum and consistency within the group.

 

So what should you do…?  Cancel?  Get frustrated by low attendance?  Press on?  Give up and move to the beach for the summer?  Rather than trying to wrestle with everyone’s schedules, or just take the summer off, here is a great way to take advantage of the summer months.

 

Change Gears

Don’t cancel; but change the focus from studying being the central focal point of your gatherings.  Change gears to provide less emphasis on weekly gatherings and Bible study.  Provide more emphasis on building community, missional activities, and evangelistic opportunities.

 

Rather than meeting every week, choose a few dates throughout the summer to focus on the bigger picture.  Remember, learning to follow Jesus (discipleship) isn’t just simply sitting and learning – it calls for much more.  A healthy Small Group also has an emphasis on building strong community, serving together, reaching out together, and more.  Often these things get brushed to the side during the week-to-week Small Group gatherings.

 

Building Excitement

Commitment and excitement fade over time.  This applies to many areas of life – including Small Groups.  Do you experience a decline in attendance in the spring and summer?  Do you, as the Small Group leader, grow weary with the same weekly pattern throughout the year? 

By changing gears during the summer the Small Group leaders, as well as group participants, get a chance to catch their breath as well as enjoy some different aspects of Small Group life.  The Fall will naturally bring a fresh wave of enthusiasm for Small Groups.

What does that look like? 

Here are some ideas to try during the summer:

  • Plan a block party in the neighborhood where your group meets (Community and Evangelism).
  • Find a one-time or ongoing service project to work on together (Mission).
  • Have a Backyard BBQ for your group, and invite others at your church who are not currently in a group (Community).
  • Start a summer bowling league to reach out to other non-churched people (Evangelism).
  • Host a free Neighborhood Car Wash in the neighborhood where your Small Group meets (Mission).
  • Find a non-churched family in your area that may need additional help (food, yard maintenance, home maintenance, etc.) and join together to assist them (Mission and Evangelism).
  • Partner with a local Mission Organizations for the summer (Mission).
  • Team up with 1-2 other Small Groups for a mission or outreach activity.

What other ideas can you and your group think of?

 

Excited about getting back.

You can try to force attendance – you can keep pushing the group along – you can keep running fresh promotions – but  eventually, it will all become background noise.  Nearly everyone involved in Small Groups (leaders and participants) will appreciate the change for the summer months; they’ll enjoy catching their breath, and be excited about getting back to the regular schedule in the Fall.
