“Keeping watch on the clock is a good habit that helps build consistency and trust within the group.”

During your Small Group gathering each week, keep these three time-management tips in mind:

1. Starting

It is rare when everyone in the group arrives on time, but starting on time (regardless of the latecomers) is important for several reasons. It sets a consistent precedence. (If you often start 5-10 minutes late, it will likely just become part of people’s schedules and expectations.) Starting on time shows respect to those who arrived on time. Also, it allows you to stick with your plan for the evening rather than cutting something else short.

2. Keep Things Rolling

There are likely several different parts to your weekly small group gathering (snacks, prayer, study, discussion, closing, etc.). As the leader, you need to take charge of keeping things flowing.  Just make sure you approach this role more like a tour guide rather than a traffic cop.

3. Ending

There may be some in your small group that have to be at work early the next morning.  Others have children that need to take a nap, finish homework, or get to bed.  There may be a reason (from time to time) when the group runs over by a few minutes, but try to make this a rare occasion.

Keeping watch on the clock is a good habit that helps build consistency and trust within the group.

My Group

  • We meet on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm.
  • The first 30 minutes is for snacking, talking, and connecting.
  • Then we have an hour for study, prayer, and discussion.
  • We end at 8:00 pm.
    • We also have an “unwritten rule” that people can stay later if they choose.
    • This gives a consistent ending time for those who need to leave, but allows others the option to hang out for a little while longer.
    • (…but the “unwritten rule” also includes the understanding that everyone will be out the door no later than 9 pm. This gives my wife and I a little time to get our own kids to bed.)
