I didn’t always have such a fond opinion of Psalm 40. In December of 2005 I wrote out the first verses of this Psalm in a journal. I included some skeptical, critical, and angry thoughts about how I doubted it’s reality. My wife and I were at the beginning of a difficult valley. We had two choices: Give up and walk away from God and each other, or push forward even though the road seemed entirely uncertain.
In the months that followed, we saw tiny little glimpses of the truth found in these verses. At first, they were rare – after some time the glimpses of truth became a little more frequent. Eventually a flood of hope and strength was flowing from the heart of God into our broken lives. In the years that have followed, Psalm 40 has become an anthem we celebrate often.
Those original thoughts are still hidden away in that journal between me and God. The thoughts handwritten above are just a few things we’ve learned along the way since then. He was patient during my bitter doubts knowing that eventually His power and purpose would unfold. We are now happy to shout from the rooftops that God DOES rescue us from the pit, mud, and mire.
Praise God the pit doesn’t last forever!
